The Camden Psychotherapy Unit (CPU) aims to extend access to psychotherapy to those for whom it has not previously been an option because of financial pressure, ethnicity or culture. The objective of our work is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of our patients, to help them with their ongoing problems and to make lasting positive change in their lives. To achieve this, we deliver long-term courses (up to two years) of free and low-fee, weekly psychoanalytic psychotherapy to our patients. We see around 150 patients from 21 different London boroughs each year at our clinic in Camden.
87% of the patients we treat score above the ‘clinically significant threshold’, indicating they are struggling significantly across various aspects of their lives, and a small but significant number present a risk of suicide or self-harm. 86% have consulted another professional before coming to us and have already tried alternative options (such as CBT or mindfulness courses).
We champion the cause of long-term psychotherapy because matching long-term difficulties with long-term treatment is highly effective; 75% of our patients show improved mental health at the end of their two year courses of treatment with us.
The Pixel Fund's generous grant of £10,000 will allow us to provide courses of long-term, weekly psychoanalytic psychotherapy to 6-7 disadvantaged young patients aged 18-25 over the next year. The CPU is extremely grateful for The Pixel Fund's continued support.
