JOIN A GRANT-GIVING MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY AS A TRUSTEE

The Pixel Fund grants to charities based in the UK. Our core focus is granting to organisations focused on mental health and well-being projects to children and young adults under 26 years old. Each year we give away around £130,000 to around 25 charities.

We have no employees and all administration is carried out by the charity's Trustee Secretary.

The Trustee's role is two-fold

  1. to decide who to grant to

  2. to make sure that the Pixel Fund itself continues to prosper.

GRANTING TO CHARITIES

Trustees meet five or six times a year remotely via Zoom (this is a pandemic response which we have kept). Two weeks before the meetings all the Trustees receive a meeting pack from the Secretary which needs to be discussed at the next meeting. Trustees scrutinise the latest applications and make collegiate decisions on them. Between meetings they have to respond to two or three emails per week and are frequently invited to charity events, particularly at Christmas.

CHARITY GOVERNANCE

In many organisations, the most onerous task is the governance of the organisation itself. However, as there are no employees or administrative functions besides granting money, governance at the Pixel Fund is straightforward - monitoring that investments are continuing in the right direction, and keeping an eye on risk. With any one grant not exceeding 5% of the grantees annual income to a maximum of about £10,000, serious risks to the Pixel Fund are not complex.

The Role - Trustee (particularly those with a financial / audit background)

All trustees fill the above roles, looking at all aspects of prospective grantees from their website to their accounts. However, we need a trustee with a background in accounting / auditing, someone with experience enough to spot accounting anomalies easily.

On top of that you will need to liaise with our accountants in preparing the accounts. The role is not a book-keeping role.

You will...

  • preferably have a background in accounting / auditing and experience working in a small informal team with statutory responsibility.

  • be able to assess the health of prospective grantees through their accounts

  • ask searching questions, air concerns and come to collegiate decisions

  • be prepared to have dinner with everyone once a year or so!

THIS IS A VOLUNTARY ROLE THERE IS NO SALARY AND THERE ARE NO BENEFITS OR EXPENSES PAID.
