The Pixel Fund has supported our Play in Mind service, which supports children aged 7-12 with emerging mental health issues through adventurous self-directed play in nature.
Sessions take place in woodlands throughout Midlothian. Children can build dens, climb trees, make campfires, relax in hammocks, create crafts and explore nature. We also guide children through ‘mindful’ activities such as listening to the sounds of nature and a sharing circle.
Through facilitating play in nature, our skilled team supports children to: overcome setbacks and increase their perseverance and resilience; recognise their strengths and improve their self-belief; manage stress / regulate their emotions and feel calmer, and; build positive relationships.
Play in Mind aims to intervene at an early stage. Our approach ensures that mental health is prevented from worsening, children build key skills and resilience that protect their mental health going forward, and children feel better.
“I love coming here, it’s chill and relaxed, it makes me feel calm.” (child)
