The grant will fund our Central Borders befriending project for children and young people with learning disabilities and autism aged 8-25. This will break down barriers with the community through volunteer befriending services that enrich members’ lives and give respite to their families.
The project will support 40 members through two in-school groups, two dedicated Youth groups and several intergenerational groups helping with transition to adult life. Activities will include arts & crafts, cooking/healthy eating, drama and film projects, games, gardening, keep fit, outdoor adventures, meals out and an overnight trip.
We will create trusting environments where members can express themselves and build their confidence and self-esteem. Members who have never had a chance to be part of mainstream social groups will be able to come out of their shells and participate fully.
Family life will be improved because members will have a brighter outlook on life and something fun to look forward to and talk about at home. 65 carers will have time to spend on themselves and each other, happy in the knowledge the person they care for is enjoying themselves safely with friends.
