In the UK, young people’s mental health is worsening - an estimated five children in every classroom have a mental health problem. Issues facing young people today include anxiety, depression, anger, school pressures, bullying and self-harming behaviours or suicidal feelings. Covid has also interrupted their education and caused stress and anxiety. Concerns about school, college or university work are high, a breakdown in routine was troubling for many. We also hear frequent reports of loneliness and isolation.
Our project will enable young people aged 11 to 15 and living in Perth and Kinross to receive one to one professional counselling. For up to 12 sessions, our specialist and highly trained counsellors will provide a safe place for young people to talk about their thoughts, feelings and any issue that causes them distress. We have extensive experience of working with young people, with sessions specifically tailored to each individual. Alongside talking therapy, we also use creative methods (e.g. sand tray work, art therapy and play therapy). We also discuss ways of self-managing difficult emotions e.g. anxiety, to help them explore and practice coping strategies to build their confidence and realise their potential.
With those waiting for statutory child and adolescent services experiencing extremely long waiting times, the counselling we provide is in very high demand. This gift from the Pixel Fund will enable us to give much needed support for the young people in Perth and Kinross.
